Bridging the gap for English Language Learners

English as a Second Language (ESL) or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is a crucial skill for individuals looking to participate and excel in today’s globalised world. Learning English opens up a world of opportunities including enhanced career prospects, access to higher education, cultural exploration, and connection on a global scale.

Teaching English Language Learners (ELLs) can be a highly rewarding experience, but it can also be a delicate and time-consuming process. ELL students may need personalised support to feel comfortable and engaged in the classroom.

Whether you are a subject-area teacher or an ESL teacher, considering the diversity of your students’ backgrounds, their varying language proficiency levels, as well as any cultural differences is key.

Here are five strategies that can help you support ELLs across all subjects:

Utilise closed captioning: Turning on closed captioning during video content helps ELL students improve comprehension and literacy skills. It benefits all students and promotes an inclusive learning environment.

Offer response choices: Provide ELL students with alternative responses when called on in class, such as an anchor chart with options other than “I don’t know.” This can help to reduce anxiety and encourage participation.

Draw or write keywords: Support understanding by visually representing keywords or concepts during instruction. You can also use Google Image search to find images related to your content to help ELL students visualise and comprehend new vocabulary.

Amplify your voice: Consider using a microphone or voice amplification system to help ELL students hear your voice more clearly. Recording lessons and sharing the audio or video with ELL students after the lesson can also be beneficial, as they can look back over the lesson content in their own time.

Make language fun: Incorporating fun and engaging activities into your lessons, can help to boost children’s confidence in their language abilities. Creating a supportive environment encourages active participation and risk-taking. Ending lessons on a fun note can be especially effective, leaving a positive impression and supporting students who may have found the lesson challenging.

By implementing these strategies with a culturally sensitive approach, you can create a more inclusive and supportive classroom environment for ELL students. Remember to take the time to value and celebrate their unique perspectives and contributions to the classroom.
